healthy weightlossDr. Martin Orimenko at the Live Well Holistic Health Center in Ardmore is excellent at helping his patients lose extra weight and optimize their health and well-being. His approach includes supporting his patients on cleanses to reset their intestinal balance and remove physical blocks to losing weight. He also does Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) to help remove any psychological blocks, interferences and limiting beliefs. Auricular therapy treatment for weight loss can also be very helpful for patients, as can Laser Acupuncture; both of these are offered at Live Well by Dr. Martin Orimenko. Lastly, natural supplement prescriptions to help reduce emotional eating and boost the metabolism can be extremely helpful as well.

The following is a list of techniques to change your orientation to food. These ‘tricks’ will help you change how you think of food and how you approach eating. They have been immensely helpful for weight management.

Behavior modification techniques:

  • Break the activity of eating into a series of small steps: preparing, arranging, eating, etc.
  • Set the table for each meal; make it a ‘production’
  • Eat in only one room
  • Eat at the table
  • Serve small portions, use smaller plates, etc.
  • Serving dishes should not be placed on the table; portions should be placed onto the plate before serving
  • Put eating utensils down between bites
  • Stop eating for a couple of minutes during each meal
  • Prepare only enough food for one meal
  • Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily and drink water with your meals
  • Make a food list before grocery shopping and stick to it
  • Never shop when hungry
  • Always leave some food on your plate
  • When eating foods like hot dogs or sandwiches prepare one and eat it before preparing a second
  • Do not keep snack or junk foods in the house
  • Do not read or watch television when you eat
  • Decide generally what you are going to eat before you look at a restaurant menu
  • Eat in front of a mirror – once
  • Eat with the non-dominant hand
  • Eat a meal with your eyes closed (to aid you in realizing that most food appeal is visual)
  • Keep only necessary foods available, such as foods with high nutritional value
  • Clear dishes directly into the garbage after completing the meal
  • Do not offer sweets to children
  • Eat with someone
  • Eat slowly
  • Save one item from each meal to eat later
  • Do not use high calorie items for snacks
  • Experiment with either exotic or attractively prepared foods
  • Swallow food in your mouth before taking another bite
  • Eat all food with utensils
  • Limit drinks which have high calorie content, especially at meal time
  • Plan delays during each meal
  • Chew food slowly and completely
  • Concentrate on food being eaten, not what remains on the plate
  • Set weekly goals for losing weight, changing behaviors and learning new skills
  • Keep a detailed record of food consumption, meals and snacks
  • Make a collage of pictures of how you’d like to look and feel and desired activities

In addition to the above ‘tricks’, engage in regular scheduled physical activity, preferably in groups, for improving health, feeling better, recreation and relaxation, reducing depression, increasing self-confidence, better weight control, socialization and camaraderie, healthy competition, self- improvement. And develop an active lifestyle by doing things like using stairs instead of an elevator and parking the car further from your destination.

I hope these tips will bring you to a higher level of health for all the days to come.

allergies and their cureDear Friends, ALLERGIES AND CHRONIC SINUSITIS CAN BE CURED!

I have been practicing ‘clinical ecology’ and nutritional cleansing for 19 years, and during that time, hundreds of patients have become ‘allergy-free’ in as few as 2 to 3 visits! Here’s how:   The sinuses are dependent on the intestines for their well-being; Clogged intestines, clogged sinuses. And when an imbalance occurs in the organisms that live in the lining of the intestines, a condition known as ‘dysbiosis’, a wide array of symptoms and conditions can occur. The list includes: allergies, asthma, irritable bowel, Crohn’s, urinary tract infections, inability to concentrate, memory loss, headaches, depression, skin conditions, fatigue, cold hands and feet, food cravings, loss of libido, joint pain and more! Humans should have billions of the beneficial bacteria living in their intestinal tract. These ‘good bacteria’ keep the yeast, fungus, parasites and bad bacteria from overpopulating. Antibiotics, birth control pills, steroid drugs, a sugary junk food diet, and even the chlorine in tap water, have a damaging effect on the good bacteria. As the population of good bacteria weakens, the opportunistic bad organisms multiply and begin a cascade of ill effects. These include: increased inflammatory response, hypersensitive mucous membranes and ‘leaky gut syndrome’, a condition that permits unfriendly bacteria, undigested proteins and toxins to enter the blood stream. The various symptoms and conditions that result from this toxification vary from person to person, but the most common reaction is allergies and sinusitis.

As you might guess, the use of antibiotics to combat sinus infections only perpetuates the problem. Septal defect surgery simply makes more room in the nasal cavity. It does not cure the problem of chronic inflamed mucous membranes! Eating yogurt or taking probiotic (friendly bacteria) supplements is only helpful in about 5% of the cases. It is far more important to artfully kill off the offending organisms and rebalance the ecology of the intestinal lining. This is where the skill comes in. A person could possibly get good results with an ‘anti-candida’ supplement from the health food store, but it’s hit or miss. Every intestinal tract is different, and there are many different types of maleficent organisms to contend with.

I use specific kinesiology (muscle-response) testing techniques that pinpoint the offending allergens, and indicate which organisms are present and exactly which nutritional supplements are needed to do the job of cleansing and restoring the balance in the mucous membranes correctly the first time in most cases. In addition, I boost the immune system and balance the organs with acupuncture, give specific dietary guidelines for clearing the mucous and increasing energy, and give specific spinal adjustments to restore balance and increase vitality.

I know it could be a stretch for some people to think that lifelong allergies could be relieved within a month or two, but the testimonials speak for themselves. Be prepared to throw away your antihistamines and inhalers and experience a greater quality of life!

10 Signs You Need a Chiropractor

A qualified chiropractor addresses the fundamental core of the body, removing impingements so that the skeleton; central nervous, respiratory, and immune systems; and muscles maintain their balance and health. When any one of these areas is not functioning well, the entire body is affected, even if there is a lack of palpable symptoms.

Avoiding Potential Problems

Just as we go to have our teeth checked periodically by a dentist, maintaining good health through regular visits to the chiropractor helps avoid potential problems in the future. And if you are experiencing any type of physical discomfort, getting regular adjustments will do wonders for dealing with and eliminating the problem at its root cause.

Compromised Health

We all hope for the ultimate in flexibility, vitality, focus, immune response, and good sleeping habits. When any of these are compromised, its time to get an adjustment!

Signs that an Adjustment is Needed

We have put together a list of 10 signs that indicate you need to visit a chiropractor:

  • Pain in joints and/or muscles
  • Headaches, including migraines
  • Repetition of physical tasks, including sitting for long periods of time where a specific part of the body is compromised
  • Posture problems
  • Injuries due to accidents
  • Feeling sharp pain in the hip going down the leg
  • Stiffness, aching, numbness, and/or burning sensations
  • The soles of your shoes wearing out differently, which is an illustration that the body is out of alignment
  • When the head leans to one side or too far forward or or one shoulder is higher than the other, which is another indication that the spine is imbalanced
  • Limited range of movement in any part of the body

Diagnosis and Treatment Before Further Damage Occurs

Often when we experience any of the above symptoms we think they will just go away on their own. While this can be true, it is usually not the case. A good chiropractor knows how to properly diagnose the problem and treat it accordingly, knowing that when pain lingers it can cause further damage.

Part of Your Wellness Plan

Most people have some sort of problem with their spine, and many back problems go undetected until one day there is no doubt that something is wrong. Approaching chiropractic help should be a part of your wellness plan so that you can avoid undue pain or even irreversible damage.

Removing Subluxations that Compromise Health

Though the application of solid chiropractic techniques that are tailored specifically to your needs, there is no need to turn to painkillers or anti-inflammatory medications that only mask the pain without ever addressing the reason for the problem. Our team believes that through the gentle manipulation of the spine, we can remove the subluxations that compromise health.

Is Technology Stressing You Out?Today, we have instant communication with anyone around the world. We can shop, study, and find any information we need online, never having to physically interact with anyone. High-tech machines are making discoveries we never could have imagined before, whether it is inside our bodies or in outer space.

The Stress of No Internet Connection

Though in so many ways technology makes life easier, it also creates stress. Just think of how anxious you feel when you don’t have Internet connection! Add this to the pressure we feel when we forget our cellphones or think we don’t have enough time to check and answer all of our emails.

Forgetting How to Interact Personally

These days we are spending so much time online that we are forgetting how to interact in a personal way with each other. Always feeling like we have to be available through our smart phones and laptops, we are anxious to connect, but hardly ever meet face to face where we can hear each other’s tone of voice and look each other in the eye.

Loosing Focus

We’ve become great multi-taskers, but we often lack focus because too many things are going on at once. We compromise our safety when we tackle several tasks at once, whether we’re making a phone call while driving or texting while we’re walking down the stairs.

Less Sleep, Misunderstandings, and Little Quiet Time

Our fixation with social media sites deprives us of the extra amount of sleep we need. Responding to unimportant information on Facebook has taken the place of meeting friends in person. Misunderstandings through email conversations happen all the time, and the sensation that we have to answer every email message right away interferes with taking care of the quiet time we need.

Isolated in a False Sense of Popularity

Technology can make us feel isolated even though we’re connected with everyone, including all of the social media friends we’ve never met. Making demands on our time, we don’t set limits as we build a false sensation of popularity.

Connected and In Touch

We believe connectivity means something entirely different than all of the above. To be connected is to be in touch with oneself, which means body, mind, and spirit.

…But Not Connected At All

We completely agree that technology is a wonderful thing and we respect it for all of its gifts. But as healers, we see what the misuse of these gifts can do, whether it is misalignment of the spine from sitting glued to a computer, getting headaches because of the constant gaze at a screen, and becoming unduly stressed out because of the pressures of having to be “connected” when really we’re not connected at all.

Our Advice

Live Well Holistic Health provides chiropractic and other healthful modalities to relieve the symptoms of stress. To remove the root cause, we advise joining live groups where you can do something you enjoy with others, like learning a new language or taking a dance or yoga class. We advise you to stay fit through exercise and eat healthy foods. Speak with people face to face, hug your friends and family, and in general, make physical contact whenever possible.

Ashwagandha: An Indian Herb for Stress and AnxietyA small evergreen perennial herb growing up to five feet tall with oval leaves and yellow flowers, Ashwagandha is actually a member of the tomato family. As one of the most powerful adaptogenic herbs, its roots have been used in Aryuvedic medicine for thousands of years for its remarkable properties.

An Herb of Many Properties

Ashwagandha’s properties are many, working on the entire body rather then just a single area. Used to relieve stress and anxiety, increase resistance to fatigue, strengthen the immune system, stabilize blood sugar, lower cholesterol, reduce brain cell degeneration, and function as an anti-inflammatory and anti-malarial medicine, it is an extremely vital herb that is loaded with potent antioxidants.

Boosting the Entire System

Also called Indian Ginseng because of its rejuvenating properties, Ashwagandha helps to protect the body’s cellular structure, as well as the integrity of DNA. Protecting the nervous system, the herb helps to neutralize environmental toxins and boost the entire system when poor nutrition has been the norm.

Protecting Brain Cells, Fighting Cancer

Scientific studies show that Ashwagandha protects brain cells against stress and that it can possibly be a viable alternative when treating Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Seeking and destroying free radicals that cause aging and disease, it has also undergone Western research to validate its anti-carcinogenic properties.

Treating the Nervous System Safely

We advocate avoiding the use of pharmaceuticals for depression and anxiety, as they often cause negative side effects. Instead, using Ashwagandha to eliminate stress is an effective way to treat the nervous system safely.

Far-Reaching Properties

Used in the over 5,000-year-old healthcare practice of Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is often prescribed for increasing energy, stamina, and greater sexual dynamism. When used in appropriate strengths, its properties can be extremely far-reaching, with patients reporting immediate relief of stress, anxiety, low energy, and diminished brainpower.

Matching the Highest Organic Criteria

Of course, one of the most essential factors in using the herb is to first make sure of your source. Ensuring that it is grown from a certified organic producer in a completely organic manner will guarantee that you get the most out of its properties. This means that all practices match up to the highest organic criteria, including management, cultivation, harvesting, production, and packaging.

If you are buying Ashwagandha in capsule form, the capsules should be made of vegetable material and the contents should be without fillers or additives. A pure product will provide much better results than one of lesser quality.

Providing the Best Products

Native to dry areas of India, Northern Africa, Middle East, Ashwagandha is now grown in mild climates, including in the United States. Working with Aryuvedic medicine here at Live Well Holistic Health, we are able to provide you with the best products in order to help you achieve the balance you deserve.

Myofascial Release TechniquesMyofascial release is soft tissue therapy that helps those with limited mobility and muscular pain become more flexible as they gain relief. With a light or deep touch, the technique relaxes muscles that are contracted while helping to improve blood and lymphatic circulation.

What is Fascia?

Fascia is a layer of connective tissue that encases muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. Fascia helps to bind structures together or allow them to slide effortless over each other. When the fascia is constricted, consequences arise in the area that can cause diminished movement and pain.

Experiencing Relief

When fascia is compromised due to injury, stress, overuse, infections, or inactivity, it can create muscle tension, overall body pain, and a diminished blood supply. Because myofascial release techniques work by applying force to the area, practitioners are able to get the adhesive tissue to become suppler through stretching and elongating it during manipulation.

Muscle and fascia are impossible to separate, which means that when either one is stretched, the action affects other areas of body. When the fascia is loosened and stretched, restrictions are often lifted as tension is released, allowing the entire body to experience relief.

This kind of healing protocol requires going through several layers of fascia to reach the deep tissues where the problem originates. Perhaps you are familiar with Rolfing, a technique created by Ida Rolf in the 1950’s to balance the body by stretching the skin. By releasing tension in this way, the muscles and skeleton can to go back to a “normal” place, thus improving posture and structure in general. As Ida would say, “put the tissue where it should be and then ask for movement.”

Indirect Myofascial Release

Rolfing has evolved over time with practitioners bringing their own style, technique, and experience to the table. Another facet is “indirect myofascial release,” which is gentler than deep tissue work. Here only a bit of pressure is applied to allow the given area to unwind naturally. Following the path of least resistance, the practitioner maintains a light pressure as the fascia stretches and movement is achieved. As the body releases tension, a softening of the tissue is felt, with the sustained pressure creating a healing heat.

Respecting the Process

There are many ways to arrive at a healthy body, and all of them require respect for the process. When a body has arrived at chronic pain, this is because problems have developed and multiplied over time. With patience and regular sessions, relief will come as the body entrains to the delight of finding its way back to proper alignment. Chiropractic manipulation, acupressure and acupuncture, shiatsu, myofascial release, and other similar protocols, when professionally applied, can all be exceptionally powerful when it comes to guiding the body back to a pain-free and easy state.

What is Kinesiology and How Does it Work? When it comes to holistic healing, the premise is generally that one looks at the entire person, rather than just the area that is in pain. Many chiropractors are choosing to incorporate “applied kinesiology” to gain greater sensitivity to the body and its often hidden messages. Often combining this with chiropractic manipulation can mean the difference between taking care of the root of the problem versus just treating the symptoms.

The Spinal Column and the Nervous System

The spinal column is one of the most crucial areas when it comes to the health of the entire nervous system. When it is confronted with an interference of any kind, the body’s natural defenses will tend to lower, which means we might start to feel discomfort, pain, and even illness. By adjusting the spine to remove subluxations, normal nerve function will usually return as the body relaxes into a more natural state.

Diagnosing Treatment

Applying the principals of kinesiology can be an extremely powerful way to help determine what’s going on inside the body in order to properly diagnose treatment. There are actually two aspects to kinesiology, the first is that it is the study of how we move in order to understand our physical, mechanical, and psychological states of being. Through this awareness, a doctor can find the best way to rehabilitate the body in order to eliminate stress and pain.

Applied Kinesiology

The second aspect is known as “applied kinesiology,” which is a technique that helps to diagnose a problem through testing muscles surrounding a given area in order to determine weakness or strength. If, for example, there is a problem with a specific organ, there is usually a weakness in the corresponding muscle. By finding the weak muscle, a doctor can then decide upon the best type of treatment. Through strengthening weak muscles, the organs that have a direct relationship with them will often also get stronger.

Determining Imbalances

Applied kinesiology can also help determine if a particular food or nutrient will strengthen or weaken a patient. By the patient simply holding the substance in the hand and holding the arm in a fixed position, the healer can try to push the arm out of position, observing the level of resistance from the patient in order to determine the level of internal balance or imbalance regarding the substance.

Testing for Disruption of Energy Flow

The idea that muscle weakness is often caused by a disruption of energy flow in the body is a fundamental principal in using applied kinesiology as a healing protocol. By testing the body in this way, a doctor can assess such things as damage to the nerves, chemical imbalances, glandular problems, a poorly functioning lymphatic system, and more. Using this technique, a person can also be tested for food and environmental sensitivities.

What to Ask a ChiropractorSeeking a good health care professional is something to be taken very seriously. Putting yourself in the hands of someone you don’t know requires careful questioning, attention to recommendations, and listening to your intuition.

Understanding the Different Techniques

When it comes to selecting a chiropractor, there are several things to keep in mind. Remember first of all that a doctor’s role is to recommend the best course of care. Understanding what the different chiropractic techniques involve is a good way to know if a particular doctor’s work fits well with you.

Getting Recommendations

First, research the chiropractors in your area. Ask friends, family members, and co-workers for recommendations. Though opinions are subjective, you know you are on the right track if enough people are recommending the same person.

Avoid Surprises

Choosing the best chiropractor for you is key to your healing process. When you feel an affinity for his or her technique, as well as a good personal rapport, you are already open to receiving the benefits of the work. Conduct a telephone interview, or ask for an in-office consultation to learn all you can before you begin treatment. You don’t want any surprises, so make sure you have all of your questions ready in order to make the best decision.

What to Ask a Chiropractor

We have devised several questions that we feel are key to determining if a particular chiropractor is right for you:
•    Find out how long the doctor has been in practice and what experience s/he has treating problems similar to yours.
•    Ask what kinds of techniques are used. Often chiropractors use a combination of strategies to maximize the healing process on a given individual. Familiarize yourself with what some of these techniques are, or ask for them to be explained. Additionally, some chiropractors use a quick manipulation technique that creates a popping when a subluxation is corrected. Others use a lighter touch, and still others use instruments to move the spine instead of just the hands.
•    Ask what kind of training and experience the doctor has had in the techniques s/he applies. Check to see that her/his education comes from a school accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education.
•    Does the doctor perform an exam before treatment? Are x-rays used, and if so, are they digital for pinpointing problems and minimizing treatment frequency?
•    How much time before an improvement is noticed and how can you contribute to the healing process?
•    Will the doctor work with your family physician, and is this necessary?
•    Could other treatment options be more valuable, such as Shiatsu or acupuncture?
•    Does the doctor offer other types of wellness information such as advice on nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction?
•    What type of payment plan is offered and are insurance claims accepted? If they are, are they submitted electronically or must you submit them yourself?

If you find that the doctor answers all your questions with openness and courtesy and is a good listener, you are many steps closer to making an informed and intelligent decision.

How to Turn Your Life AroundWe often hear that our clients are worn out, run down, and feeling weak and depressed. Through our experience, there are just few steps that when taken, will absolutely turn your life around. It starts with the premise that you are important, and that if you don’t attend to yourself, you will be giving and receiving much less than your potential allows.

Finding Balance and Harmony

By attending to yourself, we mean body, mind, and soul. Finding a balance and harmony where we can function at our highest potential requires daily consciousness. What you put into your body, your mind, and your soul is the determining factor for a life well lived.

It Doesn’t Take Much

We want to remind you that paying attention to just a few elements can make all the difference in the world. Without too much effort, you can find health and peace of mind through simple protocols that can easily become pleasurable habits.

Diet

The first is diet. Eating a balanced diet of whole, unprocessed foods is the way to properly nourish your entire system. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, wild fish rather than farmed, and organically fed chicken are ideal. Avoiding fried foods, sautéing your vegetables lightly in good cooking oils such as coconut or olive, steaming whenever possible, and baking or broiling your fish and chicken is the best preparation. Avoiding red meat if possible will help you maintain a healthy heart. Low-fat cheese, especially goat cheese, is a good way to keep cholesterol down while getting appropriate amounts of calcium.

Exercise

The second is attending to your body through regular exercise. Staying fit is essential for keeping weight down, blood and oxygen flowing, and maintaining a good mental attitude. Psychologically, we always feel better when we’ve done something active. Physically, we are doing our bodies a huge favor as exercise helps to regulate the circulatory, respiratory, neurological, and digestive systems.

Removing Blockages

The third is making sure that blockages are removed from the body so that energy can properly flow. When energy, or Qi, is not functioning well, pain and illness often occurs. We all suffer from blockages to a greater or lesser degree, especially given our stressful lives. Fortunately, there are many protocols that help to manage the flow of Qi.

Allowing Energy to Return

Whether you chose chiropractic, acupuncture, acupressure, shiatsu, massage, or other similar techniques, the physical manipulation of specific areas of the body will provide a release that, in turn, allows energy to return. The healing and energizing results that come from a professional touch will make all the difference in returning your skeletal structure, as well as the organs and nervous system, to a balanced state.
